The Third Grade enjoyed a little Roman lifestyle today, coming as Emperors, gladiators, and citizens and eating foods such as pita bread, grapes, and fig newtons. They had a great time lazing on pillows while watching Ben Hur, making mosaics out of skittles, and testing their knowledge at Roman Jeopardy.

Around the World in 180 Days!
Freedom Academy participated in the Gold Medal Schools program this year on the Gold Level (we’ve achieved the Bronze and Silver levels in the past). “Gold Medal Schools makes it possible for elementary schools to provide physical activity and healthy nutrition choices at a time when budget cuts and testing requirements overshadow physical activity and nutrition. Gold Medal Schools improves students’ academic success through policies and environmental changes that support good nutrition, physical activity, and staying tobacco-free.” (http://health.utah.gov/hearthighway/gms/)
Our goal this year was, “Around the world in 180 days!” The school nutritionists took feedback from the teachers about the places they’d learn about in their curriculum this year. They then mapped a course around the world that had the kids visiting certain cities and countries, such as Mexico, Mt. Rushmore, the Great Lakes, Washington D.C., New York, London, Rome, Greece, Egypt, India, China, and Tokyo , Japan. The students kept track of the miles they walked or ran throughout the year and watched their progress to all those places and back again, more than 22,000 miles! Come see the map in the lunchroom to get a feel for this accomplishment!
The school will receive $500 for completing the goal. The lunchroom also rewarded the students with a week of international foods of their choice. If you or your students haven’t tried one of these popular and delectable meals yet, you have 2 more days!

9-12 Expansion Approved by State
Freedom Academy’s 9-12 Expansion plan has been approved by the state charter board! Thank you to the expansion committee who have put in months of researching, formulating, and designing this project. Over the next two years we’ll see the implementation of their hard work and planning. Committees for the expansion will be formed shortly – we welcome you to be bold in attending upcoming meetings and learning how you can contribute to the future of our school!
Mrs. Herring thanks the students, teachers, staff, and parents for the support and belief in our K-8 model which drove the expansion forward.

5th Grade, Shakespeare Style
The 5th Grade performed Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Friday to a crowd of parents, Administration, and other students. The performers enjoyed a cast party afterward to celebrate the success of all their hard work.
Last Day of Kindergarten
The 2009/2010 Kindergarteners polished off the year Thursday with games, snacks, dancing, and a Wildlife Wonderland presentation where they got to see and touch animals like a parrot, tortoise, and fox. A big thanks to Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Fehlberg, and Mrs. Yorgason for the dedication they brought to our sweet kindergarteners this year!
